In the year 2014, the Hochschule Kaiserslautern [Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences] successfully participated in the German Stifterverband's [Donors' Association] nationwide "Science Scorecard" project. ZRW assumed a significant amount of the amount of financing for the West Palatinate and, in doing so, made participation in the project possible. Within the framework of the "Science Scorecard", in 13 regions and cities, it was examined what effect institutes of higher education have on the regional environment. In doing so, in particular, the potential of the regionally-located institutes of higher education regarding the economy was determined and therefore, there was a basis for more effective cooperation between academics and business in the region. But even with regard to soft location factors, the West Palatinate was able to stand up against the other regions being compared.
Insight from the project: the West Palatinate region can rightly call itself a "knowledge region". This has mainly to do with the strong centre for academics in Kaiserslautern, while there is still a need for business to catch up in terms of the intensity of research. Not least, thanks to ZRW and the Science Alliance, a good amount of cooperation has been achieved, so that in the future, there will be an even stronger academic impulse in business and young academics will be kept in the region.
